Principles of Construction
Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) is a commonly used vibration control device in high-rise buildings, bridges, and other large structures.
It consists of a mass, a spring, and an energy dissipation damping system. By adjusting parameters such as the mass ratio, frequency ratio, and damping ratio of the TMD system to the main structure, its natural vibration frequency resonates with the controlled mode frequency of the main structure. When the main structure is subjected to external dynamic forces, TMD will provide a force with almost equal frequency and opposite direction of structural motion to counteract some of the structural response caused by external excitation, thereby achieving the purpose of vibration reduction.
The working principle of a tuned mass damper is similar to tuning in the transmission and reception process of electromagnetic waves. By changing the resonance characteristics of the structure, it reduces the energy dissipation requirements of basic structural components under external forces.

The working principle of tuned mass dampers is based on the principles of dynamics. By introducing additional mass blocks, they generate opposite vibrations on the structure, thereby offsetting or reducing the vibrations caused by external excitations such as wind and earthquakes.
Specifically, tuned mass dampers are typically composed of mass blocks, springs, and dampers. When external stimuli are applied to the structure, such as strong winds or earthquakes, the structure will vibrate. This vibration can cause excessive stress and deformation in certain parts of the structure, which may lead to structural damage. The mass block in the tuned mass damper will be affected by structural vibration and produce motion opposite to the direction of structural vibration. This reverse motion will generate an opposite force that will act on the structure, thereby reducing the vibration amplitude of the structure. At the same time, the damper will absorb and dissipate the energy generated by the relative motion between the mass block and the main structure, further reducing the vibration of the structure.
In order to make the tuned mass damper work most effectively, it is necessary to tune it by adjusting the mass of the mass block and the stiffness of the spring to match the natural frequency of the structure.
